Digital Realty
Client: Digital Realty
Project Scope: Develop a global EHS Management System that is transferable across the complete business unit of Digital Realty
Location: Across APAC, EMEA, and the Americas
Duration: 3 months
ASafe Global Team: Dedicated Project Manager, EHS Lead Consultant, EHS Systems SME and Project Administrator
Project
Overview
ASafe Global partnered with Digital Realty as they required a unified EHS Management System applicable across three global regions for all their operational data centres and construction projects. The existing systems were regionally fragmented and did not fully reflect the evolving requirements of large-scale data center environments. A gap analysis and design solution was required to form the foundation for a robust and compliant global system.
Key
Objectives
12 Week Project Timeframe: Design and Implement a Unified, ISO-Aligned EHS Framework Across APAC, EMEA, and the Americas.
Week 1-4: Fact Finding, Week 4-8: Compilation and Week 8-12: Issue and Comments.
Operations & Construction Projects: Engage with EHS and Delivery/Operations stakeholders in each region to understand current challenges and regional nuances and identify opportunities for improvement on the vaired environments.
Approach &
Methodology
1. Global Stakeholder Engagement
- Engaged with EHS and Delivery/Operations stakeholders in each region to:
- Understand current challenges and regional nuances
- Identify opportunities for improvement
- Align on strategic priorities for the new Safety Management System
2. Phase 1: Gap Analysis & Baseline Assessment
- Conducted an initial audit of the client’s Central Management System (CMS) and existing H&S documentation
- Reviewed process documentation, roles, and responsibilities for selected Pilot Facilities
- Performed on-site visits in APAC, EMEA, and the USA to assess current practices and gather feedback
3. Development of a Unified, ISO-Aligned Safety Management System
- Compiled findings and created a comprehensive EHS Management System that:
- Aligns with ISO standards
- Integrates existing client practices
- Accommodates regional legal requirements
- Embeds meaningful KPIs for continuous improvement
- Ensured all templates and tools are data-enabled to generate measurable safety insights
- System designed to be flexible, scalable, and aligned with client culture and operational expectations
4. Pilot Programme Preparation
- Selected three facilities across key regions for Pilot implementation
- Developed training materials and deployment plan
- Deployed dedicated EHS “Asset” per site to: Lead implementation & Train local teams
- Monitor system functionality and compliance
5. Communication & Feedback Loop
- Weekly updates and milestone meetings with the Project Steering Committee
- Transparent sharing of tools and templates for feedback
- Implementation timeline built around actionable insights from Phase 1 site visits and stakeholder inputs
6. Outcomes of Phase 1
- Clear overview of system-wide gaps and regional challenges
- Strong cross-functional alignment between safety and operations teams
- Foundation for a scalable, ISO-compliant global Safety Management System
- Preparedness for Phase 2 pilot implementation with training and oversight plan in place
What Comes Next
Phase 2 will see the live pilot implementation and continued optimization overview. Reporting with findings from Phase 1 are submitted and improvements are made to then create an overall Safety Management System. A view toward global rollout in Phase 3 with continuous global monitoring is planned. Each phase is designed to build upon the last, ensuring long-term sustainability and global consistency in safety performance.
This project represents a landmark initiative to futureproof global safety systems in the data center space. By creating a unified, adaptive, and stakeholder-driven solution, our client is positioning themselves at the forefront of EHS excellence – globally consistent, regionally compliant, and operationally practical.
